What are the Most Common Reasons for Tooth Extractions?

Having a tooth extracted is not something that everyone will need to do.  A tooth is extracted when the tooth’s health has been compromised beyond repair, or your teeth are overcrowded.  At our practice, the most common reasons for tooth extraction include:

  • Significantly Damaged or Decayed Teeth
  • Damaged Teeth due to Trauma
  • Overcrowded Teeth
  • Impacted Teeth
  • Broken Teeth
  • Severely Crooked Teeth
  • For Orthodontic Treatment to be Completed
  • Timely Development in Children’s Mouths

Before tooth extractions, either Dr. Salifu or Dr. Geris will thoroughly examine your mouth, teeth, and gums. Our top priority is your comfort, and if an extraction becomes necessary, we will ensure that the procedure is as painless and stress-free as possible.

What’s Involved with Tooth Extractions?

Specifically, tooth extractions involve removing a tooth or teeth from its socket in your jawbone. All tooth extractions, which are part of our routine services, are performed by Dr. Salifu or Dr. Geris. For our dentists, tooth extractions are routine minor surgery.

Depending on the patient’s situation and oral history, teeth may be removed simply or require surgery. For example, when a tooth is fully visible, our dentists will apply a local numbing medication to alleviate pain and perform the extraction. Some patients may feel discomfort during the process, but no pain should exist. Discomfort is often the result of the dentist having to “rock” the tooth to allow for the expansion of the tooth socket so that it can be removed.

A surgical extraction is required when a tooth is impacted, not exposed, or has broken down. Anesthesia will be administered to provide the patient with complete comfort. When the patient is “under,” the dentist can remove the tooth. In some cases, as with an impacted tooth, the tissue and bone are removed from around the tooth. Following removal, the gum is sutured with stitches, which aids in faster recovery time. A gauze is placed on the area to absorb any bleeding, and the patient can rest in the recovery area.

Tooth Extractions

20 to 25 percent of Florida adults have untreated tooth decay, which often leads to tooth extractions. Taking care of your dental health now can prevent pain and expense later.

Following Tooth Extractions

Some patients may experience discomfort following an extraction, but it’s important to remember that this is a temporary phase typically lasting only a few days. Depending on the severity of the extraction, some patients may experience swelling in the area of tooth removal, which can be addressed with ice packs. In the immediate days following the procedure, softer foods should be eaten, and spicy or hard chewy foods should be avoided. Your dentist will prescribe an appropriate post-procedure pain medication based on the extent of the extraction. Care should also be taken when brushing or flossing to not aggravate the area where the tooth was removed.

How long does it take to Recover from a Tooth Extraction?

Recovery from a tooth extraction typically takes about one to two weeks, but this can vary based on factors like the complexity of the extraction, the location of the tooth, and your overall health. Initially, you may experience some swelling and discomfort, which usually peaks within 48 hours. Following the post-operative care instructions is important to ensure a smooth recovery.

If you have severe pain, heavy bleeding, continued swelling for 2-3 days, or a reaction to medication, call our office immediately.

What are my Restoration Options After a Tooth Extraction?

After tooth extractions, you can consider several restoration options to fill the gap left by the missing tooth. Some standard options are:

Dental Implants

These are often considered the best long-term solution. A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone as a root replacement. Once healed, a crown is placed on top of the implant.

Dental Bridges

A bridge involves placing crowns on the adjacent teeth to support a false tooth. This option is suitable if healthy teeth are on either side of the gap.

Partial Dentures

If you’ve lost multiple teeth, partial dentures can be a removable solution that fills the gap. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base that can be removed for cleaning.

Complete Dentures

Full dentures can be an option if multiple teeth are missing from an arch or all teeth in the mouth are being replaced. They are also removable and typically made of acrylic.

All On 4 Dental Implants

All On 4 dental implants restore an entire arch of teeth using just four implants. This is ideal for those with significant tooth loss who want to avoid dentures.
