Gum Disease Treatment Dunnellon

Ocala Dental Care offers gum disease treatment in Dunnellon and the surrounding area.  Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, occurs when an infection leads to inflammation of the gum tissue that surrounds your teeth. It can also destroy the bone that secure your teeth firmly in place. In some cases, periodontal disease can affect your heart, lungs, and the body’s immune system.

Depending on how far gum disease has progressed, a person may experience some or all of these symptoms:

  • Plaque buildup and tarter above and below the gum line, also known as Gingivitis
  • Bad Breath that won’t go away
  • Bleeding of the gums
  • Loose Teeth
  • Pockets between the teeth and gums

Does Gum Disease Lead to Tooth Loss?

Yes, tooth loss is the most common result of untreated gum disease. Bacteria associated with gum disease affects the bone and soft tissue.  With nothing to support them the result is tooth loss

Treatments for Periodontal Disease

Effective treatments for periodontitis will vary based on the severity of the disease.  Some treatments are surgical, while others are non-surgical.

  1. Dental Implants – When the disease has caused tooth loss, dental implants can restore functionality as well as appearance.
  2. Scaling and Root Planning – By cleaning the gum pockets and treating the gums with antibiotics, we can stop the infection. At this point, any bacteria or plaque can be removed, and the patient embarks on a course of proper oral hygiene to prevent further infection.
  3. Tissue Regeneration – With grafting techniques we can regrow gum tissues and stimulate the bone.
  4. Flap Surgery – When the pockets between the gums and teeth is too big, flap surgery or pocket elimination surgery allows the gum to be lifted back so that tarter and the infection can be removed with a laser. Then the gum is placed back in a tight fit around the teeth.

When your treatment is complete the dentists at Ocala Dental Care will counsel you on how to properly care for your teeth and gums to prevent any further infection.  If you are suffering from periodontal gum disease call or contact us to schedule an examination and consultation so we can explain your treatment options.
